Plagiarism is the act of taking work done by another person or ideas of another person than putting them as one’s own. It is an act of dishonesty, especially in academic work. The availability of access to the internet has created attention of plagiarism to the teachers and News reporters. People should understand that it is not advisable to take the work of another person and pass it as their own. It is also not good to use facts and information from sources and fail to cite the references because even if the work was not copied directly it is still plagiarizing. This should also be avoided completely.

Students who take the work of others do it because they are lazy and do not want to get tired looking for information. They also do so because they do not have enough time and the work needs to be presented to the lecturers immediately. Other students take the work of others because they are not able to organize themselves when doing their research. This should be avoided through taking notes with concern. Students may also be assisted by library attendants, the lecturers, and other learning centers to cite information correctly. Some students are ignorant and think that they will not be noticed and that they will get away with it. Those students should know that software to detect the act of taking others work are available

It is dishonest for a person to rearrange some phrases and change the tenses while the information is heavily based on the originality of the material. This is also a form of plagiarizing even if the materials are not directly copied from the source. It is referred to as patchwriting because it happens when one is trying to plagiarize and fails.

In a research that was conducted by Howard, out of 174 composition papers that were coded from sixteen different colleges showed that seventeen per cent of the writings was patch writing and not exactly plagiarism. The examples presented by Howard shows that journalists also practice patchwriting. The research suggests that people fail to paraphrase their work because they do not have sufficient time to think of their own or understand the source of the material completely. This act is dishonest and some and some editors into newsroom may object to it while others would not because some of them feel comfortable about it. Lecturers do not entertain it because it shows a lack of thinking critically and true understanding of the work by students. Students are taught how to write in school in order to attain intellectual skills and not to become writers in the future.

There are other forms of taking other works without their consent, not just through writing. Downloading a movie that has copyright restrictions is stealing and violating the rights of the movie holder. The another form of plagiarism is self-plagiarizing which involves using again of important and similar part of one’s work and failing to quote phrases or to put references on the initial work.  This act and the resulting article are referred to as duplication. It can also be an act of violation to copyright if the information is transferred to another source. It is viewed as a serious issue of ethics only when a person presents it as original material in publishing. It can also happen when a student submits again a similar copy in two different occasions and expect to be credited for it. This shows dishonesty and ignorance of students assuming that the lecturers will not discover it.

The other form of failing to paraphrase the works of others happens in the publications of organizations because they do not credit people for original documents. They assume that the books are a summary of other authors work and not their original work so it may be allowed dependently on others. They argue that those books do not also quote paragraphs and phrases of other texts and that the writers are supposed to cite the sources of their findings. The another form of plagiarism is in the art history where all the artwork is a series of traditional repetitions. Artwork is repeated in terms of creativity of arts, imitating, stealing of styles, revising the work of others, the variation of themes from others work, paradox or deliberately writing again the artwork of another person. Those who read the materials do not condemn forgery of artwork and this becomes a continuous process.

Original ideas will be found in our society because the lectures are prepared and determined to fight plagiarism completely. One of the steps that they are using is giving samples of effective writing to students where they write a few lines and then pass to the teacher instantly. Then the lecturer is able to evaluate the writing ability of each student. The another step is the use of tools from the internet by the lecturers which can scan the copied information against one another. If a student had copied from the other then the tool is able to indicate.  Other institutions fight plagiarizing through teaching the students good morals and codes of conduct so they do not copy from others. They also concentrate creating awareness to students about what it means to steal other people’s work as preventing it would be better than punishing it.

To prevent unintentional plagiarism, thirty-six students were put into a research test where on the group was trained on how to paraphrase and the other group was not. The research proved that there was no much difference between the two although the group that was trained had a better performance a moderate work given. During training, it seemed difficult for students to differentiate between the work that was paraphrased and the plagiarized one. This was so because the students said that it was easy to identify plagiarized work when the author did not provide references or leaving the original work unchanged. If the writer made certain changes the students think that paraphrasing is perfect. This shows that students may take other peoples’ work and present it as their own without knowing what they are doing.

Another research carried out indicated that plagiarizing unintentionally was brought out by failure to understand information about plagiarism. To put the students into the test they were given simple and complex paragraphs to paraphrase. The results of the test were that students did plagiarism when dealing with the paragraph that was complex than when dealing with the simple one. This shows that students possess skills of paraphrasing but they get confused when dealing with complicated work. Research also indicates that unintentional plagiarism may result from a disorganized process of cognition. Writing in one’s own words demands considerable energy in cognitive skills because when the process of writing begins students do not have left resources to get involved in thinking.  They also lack time to evaluate their work whether they paraphrased well and this leads to unintentional plagiarism.

Students can also be discouraged about plagiarizing by their lecturers through telling them to present assignment that is satisfactory. The students should write the same work in different versions according to a particular audience. They may fail to find a real audience because they think the only audience they have is their lecturer. This is described as fiction because students think that the lecturer is only testing their writing skills and a way of improving their grades.

The students who write compositions complete their course having understood most of the common formatting and different kinds of writing. They do not actually learn how to write for a certain audience that are familiar with the demands of their course situation. They lack a significance of component of awareness of rhetorical skills.

The students can increase their writing skills through doing their work in a well established Wikipedia although they would improve more on writing for their chosen audience.  The advantages of letting students write on a ready Wikipedia is because there is an audience that guides and prepares it by putting enough time and ability that maintains the vision and integrity of the site. If students were asked to create the entries in Wikipedia, they would study the posts that were previous in order to get a good preview of how those who contribute to those writings are able to make operations.

Fighting for original Ideas can also be done through; having own work copyrighted at the copyright office of the government of United States. This is done through downloading a TX form and paying the registration fee and this gives one a verification of the work in case it is copyrighted without the owner’s consent. A person should clearly state on their website that the information is copyrighted legally by the government in order to warn people with bad intentions. Authors should also keep the security of their work by installing a signal that will inform one when someone is copyrighting the work without authorization. The service and subscription of the signal is offered for free by the company.

The author should have a plan on how to confront the person who copied their work after noticing that his work was copied.  One of the factors of an effective plan is contacting the site of the person using his contact information and requests him to remove the material that has been copyrighted. The another step is to wait for the person to respond and if they do not, then the author can contact the person’s web hosting company. If the company does not respond then the owner should present a formal letter through registered mail to the owner of the website. If the owner fails to respond, the author should contact some search engines in order to report the incident. The last step for the author is taking action and keeping records because it is the solution to fighting copyrighting the works of others.
